FSSC 22000 audit duration: how audit time is set

How FSSC 22000 audit duration is calculated from ISO/TS 22003-1 plus TFSSC, with minimums, surveillance and recertification time and Version 7 changes.

Short answer

FSSC 22000 audit duration is the ISO/TS 22003-1:2022 audit time (Ds) plus a Scheme addition called TFSSC. Under Version 6, TFSSC is 1.0 auditor day for sites under 250 FTE with one or two HACCP studies and 1.5 days otherwise. Surveillance uses one third of Ds plus TFSSC, recertification two thirds, and the basic minimum is 2 days.

Key takeaways

  1. Audit duration = Ds from ISO/TS 22003-1:2022 + TFSSC from the Scheme.
  2. Ds = TD (basic time for the food chain category) + TH (additional HACCP studies) + TFTE (employee band, including seasonal workers).
  3. Surveillance is one third of Ds plus TFSSC; recertification is two thirds of Ds plus TFSSC; preparation and reporting come on top.
  4. Version 7 changes the TFSSC bands and minimums, so recalculate durations for upgrade audits from 1 May 2027.

How is FSSC 22000 audit duration calculated?

FSSC 22000 audit duration has two parts. The first is Ds, the audit time for the food safety management system calculated under ISO/TS 22003-1:2022, Annex B. The second is TFSSC, extra time the Scheme adds for its own additional requirements. Part 3 of the Scheme, clause 4.3, sets the rule: total audit duration equals Ds plus TFSSC, with an audit day normally 8 hours.

This guide follows FSSC 22000 Version 6, which applies to audits until 30 April 2027, and flags what changes in Version 7. The certification body must document its calculation and justify any adjustment. Check the current Scheme on fssc.com before updating your calculator.

What goes into Ds under ISO/TS 22003-1?

Ds is the sum of three terms. TD is the basic site audit time for the food chain category, from Table B.1. TH adds time for each HACCP study beyond the first. TFTE adds time by band of full-time equivalent employees. FTE means main shift employees, including seasonal workers, plus non-production staff who affect food safety.

ISO/TS 22003-1 excludes some activities from audit time: planning, preparation, travel, follow-up of non-conformities and anyone on the team who is not assigned as an auditor. Table values differ by category, so use the published standard rather than a copied spreadsheet. For the general principles, see IAF MD 5 audit time.

DefinitionHACCP study

A hazard analysis for a group of products or processes with similar hazards and similar production technology. More HACCP studies mean more TH time and, above two, a higher TFSSC band.

What is TFSSC and how much time does it add?

TFSSC covers the Scheme's additional requirements, which sit on top of ISO 22000 and the sector prerequisite programmes. Under Version 6 it has two values, set by the organisation's size and number of HACCP studies. The table summarises the Version 6 values and minimums.

A worked FSSC 22000 audit duration example

Take a manufacturer with 180 FTE and two HACCP studies, where the certification body's ISO/TS 22003-1 calculation gives Ds of 3.0 auditor days. The figures are illustrative. Because the site is under 250 FTE with two HACCP studies, TFSSC is 1.0 day under Version 6.

The initial audit is 3.0 + 1.0 = 4.0 days. Each surveillance audit is 1.0 + 1.0 = 2.0 days. Recertification is 2.0 + 1.0 = 3.0 days. Add 0.25 days of preparation and 1.0 day of reporting to each audit. Over one certification cycle, that is 11 audit days on the programme plus 5 days of preparation and reporting: 16 auditor days to plan. See what an audit man-day is.

4.0initial audit days
2.0each surveillance
3.0recertification days
16auditor days per cycle

ScheduleAI books against these figures, so the preparation and reporting days count against auditor capacity alongside the site days.

How does FSSC 22000 audit duration change for multi-site organisations?

For multi-site certification, Version 6 allows a maximum 50% reduction in audit duration for each site, applied to Ds only, and the site audit cannot fall below 1.5 auditor days. ISO/TS 22003-1 limits multi-site sampling to certain categories and sets the sample size, with all sites audited up to 20 and a square-root rule above that. See multi-site sampling for the general logic.

What changes to FSSC 22000 audit duration in Version 7?

Version 7 (published 1 May 2026) revises clause 4.3. Foundation FSSC's FAQ says the simple-process exemption is removed; organisations with fewer than 20 FTE and no more than two HACCP studies can go down to 1.5 days for all audit types and categories. For categories C, D and K the minimum is never less than 2 days. The TFSSC bands are also restructured, with lower additions for smaller organisations.

The upgrade process sets no mandatory increase for the upgrade audit, although the certification body can add time. From 1 May 2027, every audit uses Version 7 durations, so recalculate every site in your programme before that date rather than at booking.

Common audit duration mistakes planners see

Most duration errors come from stale inputs, not wrong formulas. These are the ones to check.

  • FTE figures taken from the contract years ago, missing growth or seasonal workers.
  • New HACCP studies added to the scope without recalculating TH and the TFSSC band.
  • Unannounced audits shortened. They are full surveillance audits. See FSSC 22000 unannounced audits.
  • Preparation and reporting time left out of auditor capacity.
  • Integrated audits with other schemes reduced without a documented basis. See integrated audit time.

How ScheduleAI handles this

ScheduleAI takes the audit duration your calculation produces for each FSSC 22000 audit, schedules on-site days with preparation and reporting time, and reserves the right number of category-qualified auditor days across the cycle.

Questions

What is the minimum FSSC 22000 audit duration?

Under Version 6, 2 days for all food chain categories, or 1.5 days for exempt simple processes with under 20 FTE and one HACCP study. Version 7 changes the exemption.

What is TFSSC?

The Scheme's additional audit time for its own requirements: 1.0 or 1.5 auditor days under Version 6, depending on FTE and number of HACCP studies.

How long is an FSSC 22000 surveillance audit?

One third of Ds plus TFSSC, with ISO/TS 22003-1 also setting a floor of one third of the initial audit duration.

Does audit duration include report writing?

No. Version 6 adds at least 0.25 auditor day for preparation and 1.0 day for reporting on top of the audit duration.

Do seasonal workers count in the FTE figure?

Yes. ISO/TS 22003-1 counts main shift employees including seasonal workers. See seasonal food audit scheduling.

Is extra time needed for the Version 7 upgrade audit?

The Foundation specifies no additional time, but the certification body can add time where it considers it necessary.
